MCC Sponsors Fall Bloodrive for Red Cross

After several years staging the McCook Community College Red Cross Bloodmobile in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center, college officials will bring this semester’s event to the MCC Student Union, located at 1202 E. Third Street.

The fall blood drive on campus will be Sept. 12 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and this year’s goal is to try and receive 33 pints. Lunch and free T-shirts will be provided to all donors. Each year, the MCC blood drive is sponsored in the Fall semester by Phi Beta Lambda and Phi Theta Kappa and with MCC Student Senate for the Spring Bloodmobile.

Walk-ins are welcome. The typical donation usually takes about an hour.

Last month the American Red Cross worked closely with emergency officials to provide comfort and support of those affected by tragedies in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio. In El Paso specifically, Red Cross volunteers supported a family assistance center.

Red Cross officials said that volunteer blood donors are needed each and every day to help save lives. These tragedies illustrate that it is the blood already on the shelves that helps during an emergency. Unfortunately, fewer blood donors and blood drives during the summer months make it one of the most challenging times of the year for blood and platelet donations.

The American Red Cross is grateful for all donors who generously give blood throughout the country. Each year the organization shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters and supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood. It also provides international humanitarian aid and supports military members and their families.
